Description

Cable cars are a true icon of San Francisco. The first cable car of this type operated in London. Years later, Andrew Smith Hallidie tested the first cable car in San Francisco on August 2, 1873, on Clay Street. After 136 years, these attractive vehicles continue to travel the city's streets, an integral part of its daily life.

The system is based on a cable pulled along its length at a constant speed by a stationary motor. The tram is set in motion when a clamping device, called a grip, is connected to the cable by pressure. Releasing this pressure, along with applying the brakes, brings the car to a stop.

There are two fleets in service today. One is the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason line. The other is the California Street line, which includes the No. 60 streetcar we reproduce in our model. It was built by MUNI (San Francisco Municipal Railway) in 1998 and entered service in 2002.

This car is based on the original car built by John Hammond & Company for the California Street Cable Railroad Company in 1906. After the April 1906 earthquake and fire, it was rebuilt at the renovated Hammond Works as No. 16, and became No. 60 in 1957 by MUNI. It was refurbished in 1968-69 at MUNI's Elkton Works, using the roof and seats from the original.
